Out With The Old, In With The New

Spring is right around the corner; that means newly bloomed flowers, longer days, warmer temperatures, and, best of all, spring cleaning! This season is literally the definition of “out with the old, in with the new”. Something about the freshness of spring really brings on the urge to update your life, and that includes your wardrobe. Put away those big, bulky winter coats and get ready to bring in those cheerful colors and light, breathable fabrics.

Now, if you’re anything like me, it feels virtually impossible to let go of a trusty item of clothing; but believe me when I tell you, it feels SO much better to have a polished and organized closet than a cluttered  and over-stuffed mess. Seriously, if you’re at that point where getting dressed feels like a chore and “Ughhh, I have nothing to wear” is said more often than not, it’s time to make the change. It’s time to get rid of those old, outdated outfits and make way from some exciting new styles!

I know, it’s tedious, emotionally daunting, and frankly, it’s expensive. But you know you’ll have to do it eventually, and now is the perfect time. Here are some tips on how to make this year’s clothing sweep easier than ever:

OUT WITH THE OLD:

1.The one year rule

Some people call it the six-month rule, but I like to be a little flexible with it. So, have you worn it in the past year? Be honest. That skirt that is so cute but you just can’t wear it cause there’s that rip that you haven’t fixed yet? Toss it. All of those shirts that you love but just have to lose a little bit of weight to fit into? Donate em. And that one outfit that is so worn but so sentimental? Seriously, toss it. You have to keep this one thing in mind while organizing your closet: clothes are not irreplaceable. If you aren’t wearing it, it’s probably just taking up space.

2. Try it on

Quite possibly the most tedious part of this entire thing is having to try on virtually your entire wardrobe when deciding on what to keep and what to get rid of. We all know that there are a million things in our closets that we haven’t tried on in a while; so put on EVERY pair of jeans you own (yep, all 20 of them) and try to narrow it down to your 6 favorites. If you’re saving that one pair of pants from 2 years ago for that special occasion that’ll probably never happen… you know what to do. And if those jeggings simply don’t fit like they used to… yep, it’s time to let them go.

3.Color coordinate

This might seem kind of excessive, but I promise it helps. Color coordinating your closet gives it a clean and visually appealing look, and makes putting an outfit together a seriously stress-free task. You can keep your neutrals in one place and your colors in another, which can help with mixing and matching. You’ll discover a new-found love for your wardrobe because you’ll start thinking of new ways to wear old items and coming up with fresh outfit combinations.

4. Don’t be so hard on yourself

Okay, now that we got all the harsh stuff out of the way, remember to be kind to yourself during this process (not too kind, cause then you’ll just end up keeping everything). Not to be overdramatic, but this stuff is hard! I know what it’s like to get attached to your clothes and add sentimental value to everything, so don’t expect this to be an easy process, and don’t expect it to be quick. Give yourself time to go through everything once or twice; then give yourself some more time to go through your “Toss” pile to make sure that you’re confident in your decisions. Be brave! You got this!

IN WITH THE NEW:

You’ve done it! The worst is behind you. Now comes the fun part. Did you really think we were going to throw out all of your things and leave you with a clothes-less closet? Of course not! And there are easy ways to re-fill your closet that won’t make you feel guilty for throwing so much out. So, what can you add to your look to re-vamp it for the new season?

“In with the new” is all about changing it up, embracing the different styles, trends, and brands that come with a new year. That may mean stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something that’s a little out of the ordinary for you. This year, we’re going for bright colors, comfortable fabrics, and versatile pieces that provide more than just style.

When shopping for new things to add to your wardrobe, try to keep a look out for those easy, go-to items that you can throw on no matter the occasion. Another thing to aim for is environmentally friendly brands and fabrics that’ll keep you guilt-free and make you feel like you’re helping the environment while still looking fashionable.

I can already tell that this season is going to be chock-full of exciting new trends to try out. Get started on your cleaning early so you can be ready to tackle those fresh looks this year, and remember to have fun with it!
